February 14, 2024: In an emotional press conference last Friday, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston announced heavy budget cuts of close to $5 million to Denver Parks & Recreation and the DMV—and it’s not expected to end there.
The city is looking to cut as much as $180 million in overall spending in order to provide support services to the growing number of new immigrants in Denver. Mayor Johnston emphasized that the fault does not rest on the shoulders of these newcomers searching for opportunity, but on federal politicians who have not provided cities with appropriate funding and resources. In times like these, we can take collective action to support those in need while also ensuring our city’s public parks remain vibrant and accessible for all.
Denver Parks & Recreation budget cuts will impact seasonal workers, recreation center hours, annual flower beds, and permits for public events. At the Denver Park Trust, we understand the power of parks. We know that they are vital resources for improving our physical and mental well-being by providing hubs for socialization, recreation, and exercise. What’s more? We know that volunteering and contributing to your community is great for your health! We’ve always encouraged community members to take ownership of their local parks and support the incredible work of Denver Parks & Recreation. And now, it’s more important than ever. 4. Donate to the Denver Park Trust
- Your contributions help enhance existing parks and create new public green spaces in under-resourced neighborhoods, ensuring equitable access to parks for all residents. 5. Apply for a community grant
- Do you have an idea to improve your local park?
