The Denver Park Trust, in partnership with residents and businesses in the Sunnyside neighborhood and Councilwoman Amanda Sandoval’s office, is pursuing an opportunity to add new 4.5 acre park and 0.85 acre trail in Near Northwest Denver, an area that scores in the highest needs category of Denver Parks and Recreation’s 2022 Equity Index and is slated for significant change in the coming years as outlined in Blueprint Denver.
Denver’s Office of Community Planning and Development is in the process of developing a Near Northwest Denver Area Plan that will outline future land use for several neighborhoods including Sunnyside. Proposed changes to the Sunnyside Industrial Area include greater density, increased mobility, and the addition of retail businesses. These factors, along with the proximity to the Quigg Newton Homes and the future Fox Park, strongly suggest the need for a new neighborhood park to be part of the revitalized community.
The Denver Park Trust is taking a leadership role in advancing the vision of a new park and mobility trail in Sunnyside. Through a coalition of residents, community leaders, Denver Parks and Recreation, other city and state agencies, elected officials, potential funders, and park advocates, the Park Trust hopes to create a partnership of individuals and organizations who, together, can secure land for use as a public park.
