The Denver Park Trust partnered with Curtis Park Neighbors to help fund a new pollinator garden at Sonny Lawson Park, establishing a native habitat for birds, bees, and bats within the park.
Sonny Lawson Park is a hub for residents of Curtis Park/Five Points. The Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library, a public plaza, playground, and ballfield are among the many amenities. The pollinator garden sits on a previously underused corner of the park and will be an anchor location on The Pollinator Trail.
Prior to the Denver Park Trust’s involvement, Curtis Park Neighbors, the local Registered Neighborhood Organization, raised $9,000 for the project. A Community Grant award of $5,000 from the Denver Park Trust provided the final funding needed to create the garden beds and install irrigation. A community planting day took place in May 2022.
