In south Globeville, a neighborhood surrounded by barriers on all sides—highways to the west and north, a busy industrial street to the east, and railroad tracks to the south—residents have lived for decades without access to a public park. When a city-owned property, which was once a “tiny homes village”, became available in south Globeville, community members advocated for the space to be transformed into a public park.
The Denver Park Trust helped expand the future park by contributing $50,000 to the city’s purchase of two adjacent parcels of land, doubling the size of the park.
While the park is being developed, the Denver Park Trust continues to partner with residents to activate the space through volunteer cleanups and supporting community events. At the Globeville Fall Fest, residents helped plant native perennials in a container garden to beautify the area and support local pollinators. Moving into the park visioning phase, the Denver Park Trust will continue to engage with and elevate the voices of local residents to ensure the park is designed by and for the community.
“We had a great time talking to neighbors and explaining that there’s going to be a park here in 2 to 5 years and the plants that they are planting will continue to be there 5-20 years into the future. By planting them it states that this is their park, in their neighborhood, it is a part of them.” – Angela Garcia, Globeville resident
